Latch on to a bottle of Old Soul red zinfandel
Our friends at WineStyles in Dumfries, VA suggested that we try a bottle of 2009 Old Soul red zinfandel. At $25 per bottle, this is a bit higher than an everyday table wine for most folks, but it’s good for any special occasion like a Friday or Saturday night.
The first thing to notice is that this is bottled by the Oak Ridge Winery, and that is a favorite for cabernets. So, what the heck, WineStyles never steers us wrong and we love the winery (you’ve got to stop there if you’re in California). Oak Ridge is the oldest operating winery in Lodi and owns some of the oldest vines in the state.
We popped open the cork and ran the wine through our Ravi Wine Chiller. One glass was run through our Vinturi Aerator. The first thing we noticed was the lack of acidity and smoothness. This really brought out some of the fruity flavors for us.
The Vinturi made a slight difference in the overall taste of the wine, but really not that much.
After tasting we discovered that this wine is actually a blend of 88% zinfandel, 10% syrah, and 2% merlot. It has won a gold medal in California tastings, and, in our opinion that was well deserved.
We give Old Soul red zinfandel a complete thumbs up.
